Microneedling
Microneedling adds a real bump to topical minoxidil for AGA.
Microneedling adds a real bump to topical minoxidil for AGA. The data is consistent. The catch: weekly sessions, 1.5mm depth, for at least 12 weeks.
Microneedling plus topical minoxidil produces better hair regrowth than minoxidil alone in androgenetic alopecia. Multiple randomised trials show a meaningful effect, including a 2013 study where the microneedling-plus-minoxidil arm gained around 17 more hairs per cm² at week 12 than minoxidil alone.
The protocol matters. The trials used 1.5mm needle depth, weekly sessions, applied for at least 12 weeks. Shorter needles (0.5mm or 1.0mm derma rollers sold for “skin glow”) do not reach the depth where the wound-healing signal that boosts minoxidil response happens. Daily microneedling does not work better and may damage the scalp.
It is also not a standalone therapy. The effect is on top of an existing minoxidil response. If you have not tried minoxidil yet, start there first; add microneedling at week 12 if results are below expectations.
