If you’re reading this at 2am with a baby on your chest, the short version: postpartum hair loss is common, alarming, and almost always temporary.

Shedding typically begins 2–4 months postpartum, peaks around month 3–4, and resolves by 9–12 months. Density returns to baseline in the vast majority of women without any treatment. The follicles aren’t damaged, they’re cycling normally, just synchronised.

What helps: addressing low iron if your ferritin is low, eating enough, gentle hair handling. What doesn’t: most “hair growth” supplements marketed at new mothers.
