PRP for hair loss has real but modest effects in androgenetic alopecia. Three monthly sessions, then maintenance. Not a substitute for finasteride or minoxidil.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for hair loss are now widely offered by clinics. The evidence is real but more modest than the marketing.

Multiple randomised trials in androgenetic alopecia show PRP improves hair density and thickness vs. placebo, with effect sizes that are meaningful but smaller than what oral finasteride or topical minoxidil produces. Standard protocol is three monthly induction sessions, then maintenance every 3 to 6 months.

The procedure: blood draw, centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, scalp injection at the level of the follicle bulb. Each session takes around 45 minutes. Out-of-pocket cost runs $400 to $1,500 per session in the US, with no insurance coverage.

Who it is for: AGA patients who are already on finasteride and minoxidil and want incremental gain, or those who cannot tolerate finasteride. PRP is not a substitute for medical therapy.
